Artist Statement

As an artist, my work is concerned primarily with the idea of capturing the rhythm of nature and the charisma of the individual, addressing the relationship between American society and personal consumption. Society’s consumer-focused mentality prioritizes efficiency over conservation, affecting both nature and the individual.

Focused on production, the contemporary commercial system pushes the individual to navigate all facets of life as efficiently as possible to meet tight deadlines. This system intends to guarantee perfection, but the natural world proves that imperfection actually enhances individuality, though this individuality is too often misunderstood and overlooked. This system also directly affects time, which records the amount that happens in a moment. Time is relative, because although it is a system that measures tempo, modern manipulations in pursuit of rapid production have sped up that pace. Because of the commercial system, time has become more valuable and more scarce, causing both the individual and nature to fall behind in this fast-paced society.

In our current society, time appears more like the enemy: rough and inconsistent. In contrast, nature’s timing is steady and sinuous. Both suffer from finite, temporal limitations, and ultimately they share the same outcome of having their problems cast aside in the interest of productivity. My art is labor intensive and requires a great deal of time to construct. This aspect is significant, because it represents a different tempo compared to the predominantly rapid pace of modern life. From experiencing and comprehending my art, one will walk way with respect that a great deal of time it takes to produce unique art.
