Creatures never seen alive are brought out of the dark depths to shine in Creatures of the Deep aquarium exhibition. These exquisite creatures are so uniquely evolved that I wanted to highlight their striking silhouettes. Emphasizing these creatures individual characteristics in a more playful manner to appeal to children. Enhanced with the high contrast neon color pallet inspired by bioluminescent bacteria. The predators stalking their pray, creates a tension filled scene. Giving the composition narrative and strong directional movement threw out.
Manipulated paper, clear acrylic, and mat board packaging construction
Material exploration in paper, exploring texture that can be created with paper by breaking or marking it, transformed this flat material giving it texture and depth. When you layer paper the flat material turns into something sculptural and creating this lace like effect. Scientific references informed the slide packaging design. Includes a viewing device to enhance interaction and display of the slide specimens.
The concept of this work is taking scientific modes of exploration in understanding by dissecting and dividing up the content in slide or petri dishes to be viewed. To enhance the feeling of cutting the outside of the shape has a light flesh color. This soft color is contrasted with the highly saturated red pigment in the interior of the shell. The way the outer shape open up is dramatic and dynamic, creating a feeling of harm done the this shape for opening it up.
The two main shapes that make up this work is the outer shape, icosahedron, and the segmented inner shape the dodecahedron.
This product line of imagined truffle flavors demonstrates my packaging design capabilities.
Stress therapy was the inspiration for this chocolate line. The idea came to mind during college finals. During times of intense stress many people turn to food to help cope with the worry. My go to comfort food was chocolate. When I was stressed out over finals chocolate was my therapy, it gave me an energy boost to keep me working and it helped me concentrate during late night studying. The psychology of food being therapy is the theme of this product line. Psychology is an academic field of study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior. Emulating the visual stylistic qualities of this field I chose to use a limited color pallet, strong close-up imagery, and using striking use of positive and negative space through out the branding.
Taking these aspects into consideration for the packaging I decided to use a chocolate drizzle on white paper that I photographed. This background image has high contrast that activates the negative space and complements the other elements of the design to tell a story. Having a close-up image of the ingredients visually shows meticulously selective observation of the quality. And paired with the chocolate swirl viewers can read what the packaging holds and what flavor it is. Each package has one accent color that connects to the flavor of chocolate. This accent color is taken from the colored image of the ingredient and is repeated in the label and along the siding of the packaging. The over all design has a striking visual rhythm.
Rorschach test is the main inspiration for the logo design. The Rorschach test is a psychological test in which subjects' perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analyzed to examine a person's personality characteristics and emotional functioning. I designed the company logo to be an inkblot. Having an inkblot motif gives the logo a distinct silhouette, making it instantly recognizable at a glance. The inkblot is an icon contextualized subject matter that connects to the study of thought and sophistication. The association with an academic study indicates this is a premium chocolate brand and can imply quality ingredients, articulated flavors, and refined texture.
Aspen in a grove are a network of individuals that form a single entity, but once you separate an singular tree from the collective we can analyze an isolated person. Under human speculation we strip away the ground to reveal the true identity of the plant that extends far beyond the surface level canopy. By exposing the root system I use myself as a metaphor in structuring the foundation of who I am. The lack of color shows how venerable we are to artificial processes and social expectations.
